Name: Bradley Bain
Age: ~600
Canon: Promise of Wizard
Canon point: Post 1st Anniversary
Suitability: He has experience as the leader of a criminal organization. In addition to that, he's also working as a Sage's Wizard and has gotten used to working in groups as part of a team.
History:
North Country is harsh, both in terms of the people and the climate. The ground is frozen over, snow is constantly there. The people are harsh and look out for themselves. The people who live there look out for themselves over others.
Bradley Bain was born as the son of a Northern wizard who was attempting to sire a powerful wizard. At this point he had a large group of siblings. Eventually their father was killed and his mana stone was eaten by another wizard. Bradley ran away because he realized the power differential between himself and the wizard.
With the siblings that ran away with him, he started a bandit gang. Eventually he killed the wizard who killed his father, and ate his stone, cementing his status as the leader.
The gang eventually expanded into people who weren't his immediate family. He attacked rich nobles and other wizards to add to his collection and his power. The humans in the settlements around him eventually started to see him as a kind of mafia boss. They could come to him with big concerns, like monsters or other wizards trying to attack them, and he would help them out in exchange for favors, food and other equipment.
After approximately 5 centuries, Bradley was captured by a group of wizards, and thrown into prison. He was forced into making a promise that he would serve the entire length of his sentence. During this time, his bandit gang dissolved.
About 100 years before the current timeline, Bradley was chosen as a Sage's Wizard. Once a year he was let out to fight against the Great Calamity (the moon).
Out of the 21 wizards that were chosen, only the Northern wizards got away without any losses after the most recent fight. The Great Calamity also inflicted a bizarre injury on each wizard that managed to survive it. Bradley's injury is every time he sneezes, he gets teleported away. Due to this, he is assigned parole officers instead of being put back in jail.
Among the newly selected wizards, one of them was formerly part of Bradley's gang, Nero. Bradley convinces him to break into a tower and steal back the things the government took from him. They run into a monstrous bird and Nero convinces him to stop it from wrecking havoc on the city. This leads to them fighting off undead and the wizard who caused a portion of this chaos.
In the end, he agrees to live with the rest of the Sage's Wizards.
North Etude: The North wizards' first mission together is to track down a gang of bandits. Bradley uses this time to reduce his sentence, and ensure that his jailers will ignore anyone who used to be part of his bandits if they come across them. He also learns that being nice, polite and humbling himself is also a useful tool for dealing with groups of people.
South Etude: Northern wizards are stent as support for the Southern wizards. Here the mission is to deal with a traveling oasis. Because the oasis was made by a deceased wizard's magical tool and out of a crazy wish to see a friend again, Bradley suggests that they crazily enjoy the night before they deal with the problem.
East Prelude: When the East wizards are sent to purify their temple, the Northern wizards are sent as support. They initially do not assist because they don't feel like they're being appreciated enough. When things go poorly, they do show up in the nick of time and help deal with the monster that's been haunting the land, then help purify the temple.
North Prelude: The last of the temples to be purified, because everybody is aware of how difficult Northern wizards are. They are also sent the strongest wizard in the world, Oz, in order to ensure they behave. Bradley uses the North wizard's shared resentment of Oz to convince two of the other Northern wizards, Owen and Mithra, to work together to seal Oz away. This plan immediately goes sideways because Mithra does not want to remember the steps, Owen gets frustrated that he poisoned himself for the plan. They almost all get trapped inside of a void, but manage to avoid that fate because Mithra can create doorways. They manage to purify the temple.
North Ballad: Bradley gets sneezed away to a small town and proceeds to eat their food. One of the girls remembers who he is and travels all the way to the wizards' manor to demand he pays it back. Instead of doing that he agrees to perform the town's dance ritual. There's a rumor that this place was untouched by the Great Catastrophe and all of the Northern wizards are sick of dealing with their bizarre injuries.
South Ballad: A monster escaped a barrier that the Northern wizards put down centuries ago and forgot about. The North and South wizards are asked to deal with it. The Northerners agree because the name "Poincaré" sounds familiar to them. Bradley works in a two person team and gives orders to help seal away the monster again.
First Anniversary: The Northern wizards run into a witch was trying to collect wood from a specific tree. They get caught up in fighting each other and fail to apprehend her. The agree to pretend they don't know her, because otherwise their pride will be stung.
There are five witches and they attack the manor the wizards are living in under the orders of somebody who is calling himself their father. It gets covered in thorns, and several magical beasts are summoned to fight the Sage's wizards. Bradley ends up on the outside of the manor, with Nero and the witch named Cyan. He manages to learn her motives and attempts to talk her down.
Since she doesn't, he fights her and her acid spewing bird summon, the Basilisk. They use the acid to burn a hole through the vines.
Once they re-establish contact with the Sage, he comes up with the idea of shining light on top of the Minotaur's head so he can shoot it until it dies. The Minotaur has the younger, more inexperienced wizards cornered at the moment.
The Basilisk eats Cyan, and it's revealed she's a wooden puppet that was given life through a mana stone. The Basilisk grows even larger, and Bradley transforms his rifle to a pistol and shoots Nero at close range- buffing up his magical power significantly. Between working together with Nero and the wizards who are with them, they manage to down the Basilisk.
Then they turn their attention the Minotaur, and right as Bradley gets ready to shoot, his bizarre injury kicks in and he teleports away. He comes back right as the Minotaur brandishes its axe above one of the children. Out of sheer luck, he managed to sneeze his way into the labyrinth of the Minotaur and saving them by shooting it. He encourages the kids and praises them for holding out. Then he steps aside and lets another wizard take off the Minotaur's head.
Eventually everything is resolved, the witch dolls are dead, the person who used them was killed by Oz. All of the chaos that was caused by that rogue wizard was put back by Oz. Nobody except the Sage and the Sage's wizards remember what happened that day.
Brad picks up an old ring he used to have when he was a bandit and shows it off to Nero, who denies ever remembering it.
Personality:
He's a Northern wizard, through and through. Power, pride and freedom are the cornerstones of these wizards. Power is coveted and his magic words say it. Adnopotensum - To become powerful. He will eat other wizard's stones to collect more power for himself. Chase power, collect it, what kind of Northerner would he be if he wasn’t constantly trying to get stronger?
Unlike other Northern wizards, who isolated themselves, Bradley was the leader of a bandit gang for several centuries. He cares about people, those that are part of his gang are actually under his protection. Even those humans that settle under his protection, he looks out for. Akira considers him a kind of mafia boss.
Bradley says if anybody leaves his bandit group, he'll kill them. What actually happens is he lets them go off to settle down. When it comes to what he says and what he does, there’s often a disconnect when he’s threatening people. There's a bluster to him because he needs it to survive in the North, where a single moment of weakness has the potential of killing him.
Bradley does recognize a big enough power differential. He’s always aware of his power in relation to somebody else’s. While he does push and see how far he can take himself, he tends to take himself to the very edge of survival when he's in good condition. But he's more cautious when he knows his opponent is serious. If he dies, that’s the end. Only the living are capable of becoming stronger.
Despite all his constant power chasing, is the weakest of the Northerners and every single one of them knows it. He’s the one who knows strategy in order to shore up for his personal weaknesses. He's a skilled tactician and quite a few times people come to him for this advice, which he gives easily enough.
As a Northern wizard he does judge others by their power. But if they fight for their friends, if they don’t just roll over and accept they’re weak, he likes them. He also tends to respect people who have a strong sense of their own convictions.
Powers:
A wizard is somebody who can use magic and has an incredibly long lifespan in comparison to a human. When a wizard dies, they do not leave a corpse, instead they leave a crystallization of their soul, called a mana stone. A wizard can eat a mana stone in order to add to their own power. A human gets nothing out of eating a stone, however, they can be used as a kind of power source.
Wizards have spell words to invoke their magic along with a magical tool. Because magic is used with the heart, it's a phrase that is important to them in some way. Bradley's word is "Adnopotensum" and his tool is a rifle.
If a wizard makes a promise and breaks it, they will lose their magic.
Here is a list of things wizards have used their magic for:
- Attack magic
-> Tearing, rending, inflicting harm
- Creating sugar
-> The sugar wizards make has health benefits; it’s known to reduce both physical and mental fatigue.
- Transformation and replication magic, on themselves or on inanimate things
-> Bradley uses a version of this, by replicating his bullets so he doesn't run out of them, and transforming his rifle to a pistol and back.
- Spells that bring about blessings and peace
-> Bradley is not interested in these and will not perform any
- Meticulous magic that requires great focus
-> Curses, temporarily changing somebody's luck, dull and sharpen senses
- Summoning items, teleporting items, levitating items
-> Usually used with his magical tool or broom. Levitation can be used to fly on brooms.
- Healing wounds from minor to severe, bringing people back from the brink of death
-> Bradley does not have much experience in this
- Sealing monsters, erecting barriers to keep other wizards in or out
-> Generally needs more than one wizard
- Self temperature regulation, detecting other wizards, seeing through illusions
He is capable of using magic to posses people, make them obey his orders, and use them to relay messages. There does not seem to be a limit to the amount of people he can use this on at a time. Nor does it seem like there's anything they will not do, under his influence. However, he cannot use this on anybody who is magically stronger than him.
Northern wizards like him specialize in attack magic, the type that does harm to others directly. Bradley's specific magical expertise is magical reinforcement. If he chants his spell and shoots somebody with his magical tool (his rifle) they gain more magic power while the spell is in effect.
Because his magical tool is a rifle, he can always ensure an accurate shot.
Wizards have a mana area, where they can go to recharge and meditate to regain any lost strength. They can also use something from their mana area to enter into a meditative trance and recover. Bradley uses a glittery blue gemstone.
This is less of a power, and more of a curse, but whenever Bradley sneezes he teleports somewhere else.
Luonto: Snow Leopard.
Immunity: Yes
Inventory:
- The clothes on his back.
- A glittery blue gemstone.
- A well crafted rifle.
- 20 bullets for the rifle.
- Good Luck ring.
Questions:
- Someone on the island has been stealing from others. So far the thefts have been minor, but others on the island are growing agitated because of it. How does your character go about solving this problem? Do they track down the thief, talk to the people to calm them down, or do something else? And if they find the thief, what will they do to them?
As a bandit, he's not really bothered by somebody stealing as long as it's not affecting him or his own things. There's no reason to go after them if all the thefts are minor. This doesn't really register as a problem to him.
However, if somebody asked him to get involved, or if they stole from somebody he cared about this is what would happen. He'll trap something that's in line with what the thief has taken so far with a curse that makes the thief have unreasonably bad luck. It won't kill them, but it will mean they can't steal without being caught. A lot of tripping, whatever stealth they have is rendered useless, and they'll become loud when they're trying to sneak.
If Bradley finds them he'll ask them what they've been stealing for. Want to gain riches? There's better ways to go about it than this. The people on this island aren't well off. It's a complete waste of time to steal from them. Everything is so minor, and it's not like he can really sell off any of those spoils, because the island community is small enough it's too easy to track down the original owners. He'll also say that if they agree to give everything back, he'll remove the curse. If they don't, then they'll be stuck with it and they'll never be able to steal again.
- Your character is part of a group of 4 (which is comprised of them, a young farmer, a middle-aged ship navigator, and a retired soldier in their 70s) that needs to get from one island to the next before sunset. While there are no trolls currently pursuing them, your character knows that they could potentially attack anyone left on this island. The next island over is a safe one. The canoe they have can fit a maximum of three people in it, and you have just enough time for one trip to the safe house before sunset. A second trip to get anyone remaining can be done, but it will be during nightfall, when the risk of attacks is high. Your character gets to decide who goes on which trip with the canoe. How do they arrange everyone for trips, and what is their reasoning for their decision?
Naturally he'd just cut the knot, summon his broom and fly along with the three of them on the boat. But if he couldn't do that:
He knows he's immune. So he knows, reasonably, between his own battle skills with his rifle and his ability to simply survive, he would make it if he was left on the island for last. However, he does not trust this group of strangers to come back for him, which means he's putting himself on the first boat out of here. A young farmer, that's useful, Bradley himself doesn't know much about crops or raising livestock, however he does know farmers are good for muscles. Makes sense to put him on the boat so he can row it. The ship navigator is a requirement for any other island explorations they'll need to do in the future, can't leave him to die. That puts him at three people.
The soldier is the most expendable to him. If they make it great, if they don't, oh well, no great loss. To him, there's nothing an old soldier can do that he couldn't do better. Still, he'll be coming back for the soldier as soon as the other two are on the safe island.
